Stroke Care and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA)

Patients under the care of the Visiting Neurology Consultants

For the foreseeable future, Dr Bracewell and Dr Pietkiewicz will not be able to visit the Island. All non-emergency neurology services at the Walton Centre and all its satellite sites (including Noble’s) have been suspended. 

If you have Parkinson’s Disease or another form of parkinsonism and are under the care of Dr Bracewell or Dr Pietkiewicz, please contact Susan Lawley in the first instance if you require advice or support (as above). If required, Dr Bracewell, Dr Pietkiewicz (or the on call neurology consultant at the Walton Centre) will be happy to offer telephone advice to Dr Thomas and his team.

Visiting hours

1pm to 8pm

Two visitors only per patient permitted at the bedside at one time please. Any additional visitors will be asked to wait off the ward to minimise disruption to the ward/patient environment. If the patient is receiving care, therapy or is with a member of our multidisciplinary team you may be asked to wait in the ward lounge or to leave the ward and then return. If this is in use between the hours of 9-5 for family/staff meetings, you may then be asked to wait off the ward.

If you are visiting the ward during mealtimes (12:30pm to 1:30pm or 5pm to 6pm) and the person you are visiting requires assistance, we appreciate and encourage relatives/carers to actively be involved in providing assistance where possible. If the person you are visiting does not require assistance, we recommend that you bring your own drink/meal with you to eat alongside them. If it is felt that visiting may distract the patient, please allow them to have their meal undisturbed and visit after mealtimes.

There may be times when visiting is restricted due to therapy, treatment or requirement to rest due to post stroke fatigue. Please do not be offended if this occurs, as it is to ensure maximum recovery from stroke.

Outpatient

The hospital provides hyper acute, acute, rehabilitation, and follow up services for those people diagnosed with, or require assessment for stroke or TIA (transient ischaemic attack).

You may be referred to any of the following outpatient clinics:

Inpatient

Ward 4 is the Acute Stroke Unit which provides hyper acute care, acute care, comprehensive investigations and assessments, treatment and rehabilitation to patients who are diagnosed with, or suspected of having a Stroke or TIA. Whilst you are an inpatient on Ward 4 you will have access to: 

  • A stroke Consultant and their team of Doctors
  • Nurses (including the on-call stroke nursing team)
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Speech and Language Therapists
  • Dieticians
  • Neuropsychology (via referral from the Mental Health team)

Each Tuesday, there is a multidisciplinary team meeting which will discuss your progress and develop an agreed action plan for your future therapy and treatment. We also offer regular update meetings for our patients. This enables you to invite family/carers/ significant others to attend and receive an update on your care from the appropriate members of our multidisciplinary team (therapists, nurse, doctor) and is a good opportunity to set holistic person-centred goals to support your rehabilitation and discharge from hospital.

The ward aims to make your stay and discharge as effective as possible, if you have any concerns or queries during your stay please do not hesitate to speak to any member of the team. We hope to ensure you are fully included in all your care and discharge decisions and actively encourage carer and family participation, with your permission.

Additional support services

The stroke service at the hospital works very closely with patients, caregivers, their local representative body, The Manx Stroke Foundation and the Isle of Man branch of the Stroke Association. Whilst an inpatient, you and your relative/carer will be asked whether you wish to be referred to the Stroke Association for further support during and post your admission.
