Respiratory conditions treated at Nobles Hospital and Ramsey Cottage Hospital

Bronchial asthma

This is a common but often debilitating condition seen in all age groups. The Respiratory team at Nobles offers a range of treatments and advice on how patients can manage this condition in the community and when to recognize acute symptoms.

There is also a nurse led clinic who will work with you to educate and advice patients on inhalers technique, self-management plan.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD is the name for a combination of lung diseases which includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease, all of which can occur together. COPD is one of the most common respiratory diseases in the UK and there are large number of patients on the island who are treated at Nobles. This occurs as a result of damage to the lungs mostly due to cigarette smoke. There is also a pathway which has been in place for further referral to smoking cessation clinic and also to pulmonary rehabilitation. This causes breathing problems which often gradually get worse, and can result in decreased quality of life and even heart failure. 

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) Or Lung fibrosis

ILD is a group of lung conditions where the air sac in the lung is scarred and doesn't work properly, preventing oxygen getting absorbed into the bloodstream properly. It includes conditions such as asbestosis and pulmonary fibrosis.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. The common symptoms include snoring, daytime sleepiness and stopping breathing in-between breaths at night (apnoea). This is common condition seen people who are overweight or obese which are at risk of developing stroke and cardiovascular disease. 

Respiratory support for neuro-muscular conditions

Neuromuscular conditions e.g. motor neuron disease is prone for respiratory failure secondary to their respiratory muscle weakness. These patients are supported with non-invasive ventilation in the community.

Long term oxygen therapy

Patient who have  COPD who could develop respiratory failure requiring long term oxygen to cope with symptoms and help to improve quality of life. These patients are seen in the above clinic for assessment and prescribing oxygen. This is run by physiotherapist under the supervision of the respiratory consultant at Nobles hospital on alternate Thursdays.

General respiratory clinics

Patients with bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, hay fever, pulmonary embolism, and discharged patients from hospital are seen in this clinic which is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays every week.

Rapid access lung cancer clinic

The patients who need investigations for suspected lung cancer are seen in this clinic on every Mondays at Nobles. This is a fast referral clinic referred by GP or from other specialties for early diagnosis of lung cancer. Once diagnosed patients will be referred to visiting Oncologists or cardiothoracic surgeon for further treatment.

Clinic in Ramsey Cottage Hospital

This is a general respiratory clinic run alternate weeks for patients who are based in and around Ramsey.
