Paediatric Diabetes

We aim to deliver a quality specialist diabetes service working in partnership with children/young people and their families following national frameworks and guidelines.

We offer support and education sessions to all children and their families at home and at Nobles Hospital, providing individualised care packages in line with best practice guidelines.

Ongoing education and support is delivered to the child/young person and their family on an individual basis or where appropriate in small groups to help the child/young person achieve and maintain good diabetes management. Sessions will include carb counting, exercise, illness, travel and insulin pump updates.

We also provide education and support to hospital and community health professionals and school and nursery staff caring for the child/young people with diabetes.

We have offered an insulin pump service since 2008 with 80% (May 2023) currently using insulin pumps. Insulin pump therapy is offered if suitable for the child and family.

Diabetes clinics are held most Wednesday afternoons in the Women and Children's Outpatient Department with all children being seen by the diabetes team 4 times per year. Preparation for Transition to Adult Care will commence after the age of 14 years with joint clinics being held in the Diabetes Centre with members of both the Children’s and Adult Diabetes Teams.
