Hospital pharmacy forms a vital part of the Health Service, providing a broad range of services. Pharmacy staff work alongside other healthcare professionals to help patients and their carers get the best from medicines.

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are registered healthcare professionals with key expertise in the use of medicines. Along with doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals they work hard to ensure medicines used in the hospital are safe, effective, and of a suitable quality.

Partners in care

Nobles Pharmacy staff provide a variety of services including:

  • the purchasing and dispensing of medicines
  • preparation of injectable medicines for use in cancer and other specialities
  • checking on both admission and discharge that patient’s medicines are correct
  • supporting appropriate + safe use of antibiotics and other anti-infective medicines
  • supporting appropriate + safe use of medicines in mental health, critical care, oncology + haematology, palliative care
  • medicines information
  • support to various groups and committees involved in medicines management

Specialist skills

Pharmacy is a graduate profession. Pharmacists study for four years and must then complete a year's pre-registration training and pass an examination to demonstrate their competence to enter the register of the General Pharmaceutical Council. They must then undertake continuing professional development to maintain and demonstrate ongoing professional competency.

Pharmacy technicians are highly skilled and qualify after 2 years with a BTEC (Pharmacy) or NVQ in Pharmacy Services level 3 qualification. To practice pharmacy technicians need to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council and undertake continuing professional development to maintain and demonstrate ongoing professional competency.
