Visiting times

Patients should only usually stay on the unit for a maximum of 24 hours. Any patients requiring a longer stay in hospital should be transferred to one of the medical Wards 6, 7 (stroke ward) and 9 for further care, or alternatively Coronary Care Unit (CCU) or Intensive Care Unit (ITU) should their condition require more intensive input. Patients may also be transferred to a tertiary centre in the UK for specialist care.

Staff will do their best to keep you and your relatives up to date with movements to other wards, however at times these moves are required within a few minutes due to bed pressures. We apologise if relatives have to experience this but staff will try to ensure information is shared about this at the first available moment, we thank patients and relatives for their support with this.

Meal times

Breakfast 7.30am to 8.30am
Lunch 12pm to 1pm
Dinner 4.30pm to 5.30pm

Snacks and drinks are available at any time.

There is a trolley that visits the unit daily during the week where you can buy drinks, snacks, gifts and newspapers and the hobby trolley and the hospital volunteers' visit with books to read. Each bed area has access to their own TV with headphones and there is access to the internet.

We have a large patient lounge and pleasant waiting area and outside courtyard.

About us

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a 20 bedded unit which accepts medical patients referred from ED, MIU (Ramsey), GP’s and clinics 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We are based on the ground floor West Wing of Nobles Hospital. The AMU accepts both male and female patients over the age of 16yrs in single gender bays or individual rooms.

The unit is managed by a Senior Sister with support from Sisters and Charge Nurses and a highly skilled team of Registered Nurses and Health Care Assistants whose prime responsibility is to provide high standards of care which meet specific needs, promote safety and recovery. 

Patients who are aware of their admission to AMU are advised to bring their medications or drug list and a change of clothes in case an overnight stay is required. 

On referral, patients are triaged by the on call medics and the nurse co-ordinator to enable assessment of their condition and prioritisation. On arrival patients are assessed by doctors and nursing staff and tests/investigations taken. Patients are then reviewed by a consultant within 12 hours of admission where further tests and investigations may be requested which will help determine the plan of care.

There is a consultant based on the AMU 5 days a week and together with the medical team and nursing staff all patients’ care and treatment is monitored and planned on a regular basis. During weekends patients will see the consultant in the morning and in the evening but throughout the day there is a team of doctors on the unit who will oversee and manager the care.

Nursing staff with patients consent will refer patients to other services such as dieticians, social worker and diabetic nurse.

The AMU also has a clinic where patients’ may be seen as an outpatient by the AMU consultant after they have been assessed as not requiring admission.
