COVID-19 - Advice to ophthalmology patients
- Any patient who needs emergency care should either contact their GP or go to the A&E at Noble’s or the Minor Injury Unit at Ramsey. The GP or the attending A&E doctor will then contact the on-call Ophthalmologist for advice.
- All non-urgent scheduled eye clinic appointments are deferred. This is being done on the basis of clinical need.
- Our doctors and nurses are reviewing each patient’s requirement individually. This is to minimize the number of people travelling to a clinic and to ensure that we are using NHS staff and resources wisely.
- Someone from Noble’s Hospital will contact you about your cancellation.
- Those patients who need to be seen in the Eye Department will have their appointments spaced to minimise patient to patient contact.
- In the out-patient waiting area, the chairs have been arranged to minimize the proximity of patients.
- All non-urgent elective surgical procedures are cancelled until further notice.
- ARMD Service will continue for the time being.
- Due to reduction in general elective care activity, the number of ARMD clinic sessions carried out at Nobles will be increased. This is to allow sufficient spacing between patients to reduce patient to patient contact.
- All patients are requested not to attend more than 10 minutes before their clinic appointment.
The department of Ophthalmology diagnoses and treats all patients with eye conditions in a professional, efficient and friendly manner, within a safe environment that promotes privacy and dignity.
All elective and emergency patients are seen at the Eye Clinic in Suite C, West Wing, Ground Floor, Noble's Hospital.
This is all Island service for both adults and children.
A Consultant lead satellite clinic is held at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital once a month on a Wednesday.
New referrals are received from GP’s, Optometrists, Orthoptists, other Hospital Consultants, A&E Department and School Eye Clinic. All patients willl be seen in clinic. The most frequently requested investigations are:
- Cataract pre-assessment -Intra ocular lens calculations with the use of IOL Master- (Optical biometry) and A-scan.
- Medical Laser – non refractive
- Central & Peripheral visual field assessment / driving tests
- Corneal thickness testing
- OCT – Optical Coherence Tomography
- Retinal Photography
- Day Case – Main Theatre
- Minor Operative procedures that normally takes place in the outpatient clinic
All clinics take place Monday to Friday 8.30am - 5pm (excluding Bank Holidays) by referral only. However there is always 24 hour emergency Ophthalmologist cover via the Emergency Department (A&E), GP & Medical Emergency Doctor (MEDS).
Visiting Orthoptist clinics Wednesday 10am - 5pm and Thursday 8.30am - 3pm.
Where to report
Please report to the Outpatient Appointments Reception in the main foyer of the Hospital, where you will be directed to the Eye Clinic in Suite C.
Information for visitors
Dilating drops can cause blurred vision for a short length of time. Usually vision returns to normal after 4-6 hours, though the length of time varies from individual to individual. Patients will also notice an increased sensitivity to sunlight and bright lights. We advise patients to wear dark sunglasses after receiving dilating drops.
Driving is not advised after these drops, as it is not possible to determine how much vision will be affected. Make sure you arrange with someone to drive you home after your appointment.
