Who we are

Previously known as the GUM Clinic and Family Planning Clinic, we are now called Manx Integrated Sexual Health Centre ('MISH'). Our team of friendly Doctors and Nurses provide a free, confidential and non-judgemental service that offers Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening and contraception services. You can refer yourself to our clinic – you do not need to be referred by a Doctor.

Who this service is for

Our service is for everyone, whatever your gender, sexuality, age, race or faith.

Confidentiality

A strict code of confidentiality operates within our service to protect our patients. We use a separate IT system, which means that it cannot be accessed by anyone outside of MISH, and your notes do not form part of your GP or hospital medical records.

Each patient is given a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN). This ensures that only MISH staff have access to your details. Any samples/swabs that are sent to the lab or prescriptions that need to be dispensed by the hospital pharmacy are sent just using your PIN number.

What we can provide

All of our services are free:

  • Screening and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including HIV

  • Postal home testing kits are available, following a telephone appointment with one of our nurses

  • Contraception (including patches, pills, injections, diaphragms, coils and implants). Please note we can provide contraceptive devices for contraceptive use ONLY. If you require it for any other reason, such as symptom control, please see your GP who can refer you to the appropriate department

  • Emergency contraception

  • Treatment and onward care for all conditions including HIV

  • Condoms - you can call in to collect condoms at any time during clinic opening hours

  • Cervical screening/smear test – opportunistic smear tests when carried out at the same time as screening/contraception advice

  • Consultant-led clinics for genital dermatological conditions and management of vulval disorders

  • Healthcare for victims of sexual assault

  • Onward care to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre

  • PEPSE (post exposure prophylaxis following sexual exposure) for HIV. If out of hours/bank holidays, this can be accessed via the Emergency Department

  • PrEP (pre exposure prophylaxis)

  • Advice and support for unplanned pregnancies

  • Pregnancy testing and advice

  • Termination of pregnancy service

  • Vaccinations as required for patients assessed as being at risk of infections

Appointments

When you ring for your appointment, the receptionist will ask you what your appointment is for and whether your appointment is for a routine check-up or if you have symptoms. This is not a case of the receptionists being nosey! Our reception team are trained to ask certain questions in order to ensure that you receive the most appropriate appointment. If there is no appropriate appointment for you, you may be asked to call us again the next day.

The receptionist will also ask whether you give your permission for us to send you a text message appointment reminder. You can, of course, change your mind at any time and contact us to withdraw your permission.

Your appointment

Upon arrival at the clinic, whether you are a new patient or a returning patient, you will be asked to complete a Registration Form and a Triage Form – even if you have been to our clinic before. The Registration Form is to ensure that we have the most-up-to date contact details for you. The Triage Form is to help us make sure that you are seen by the appropriate clinician.

You will most likely need to wait in a shared waiting area until the Doctor or Nurse can see you. Other patients will not know the reason why you are attending, and they will be attending for a wide variety of reasons themselves.

All of our patients are routinely offered screening for STIs and blood tests for blood borne viruses.

If you do not have symptoms, you may not need to be examined prior to testing. Examinations are usually only required in addition to the testing if you have symptoms.

If you need advice and provision for contraception, our clinicians will assist you in making an informed choice, taking into account your social and medical history, lifestyle and your preference at the same appointment.

For certain contraception, such as coils and implants, following your initial appointment, the clinician will book you into one of our procedure clinics.
