Paediatric Diabetes

We aim to deliver a quality specialist diabetes service working in partnership with children/young people and their families.

We support and educate all children and families at home to help them achieve and maintain good diabetes management, providing individualised care packages in line with best practice guidelines.

We have offered an insulin pump service since 2008 with 75% using insulin pumps. Insulin pump therapy is offered if suitable for the child and family.

We also provide education and support to all health professionals caring for the child/young person with diabetes as well as school staff, nurseries, after school clubs etc.

Outpatient clinics are held most Wednesday afternoons in Women and Children's outpatients with all children being seen by the diabetes team 3 to 4 monthly and occasionally more frequently. As part of transition to adult care between 15 and 18 years old, clinics are held in the Diabetes Centre with introductions to the adult diabetes team.

Paediatric Referrals

There are 3 categories of referrals that children will be grouped into based on their assessment of needs:-

  1. Urgent – Child needs to be seen the same week, either in clinic or the Children’s Ward.
  2. Routine – Child needs to be seen at the next available outpatients appointment (generally less than 6 weeks).
  3. Other / Specified – Child needs to be seen after a specific timeframe (eg after an MRI scan when the results are available)
