Free lecture on Manx stone axe head project

Monday, 6 March 2017

Next Wednesday evening, Dr Katie Kewley will be giving a progress update on the Manx Stone Axe-head Project as part of University College Isle of Man’s History & Heritage lecture series

As part of the project, the axe-heads housed in the Manx Museum have been analysed and compared to collections from around the Irish Sea region. A database containing the morphological, petrological and contextual information available for each of the artefacts has also been created.

Until recently, these stone axe-heads had only been subjected to a cursory analysis as part of a larger, on-going study of axe-heads undertaken in the United Kingdom. A more comprehensive review of the Manx collection was therefore overdue.

This lecture introduces the Project’s findings so far and discusses the relevance of axe-heads to our current understanding of the Manx Neolithic in its Irish Sea context.

Dr Kewley’s lecture on ‘The Manx Stone Axe-head Project’ will take place in the Lecture Theatre at Elmwood House (behind the St John Ambulance Centre, off Glencrutchery Road) at 6pm on Wednesday 15 March. All are welcome, and no booking is required.

Please note that this lecture will NOT be recorded or live-streamed.
