Sure Sports Primary School Programme hockey winners

More than 500 pupils enjoyed a fun introduction to hockey thanks to a programme for primary schools.

The pupils competed in regional competitions that led to a final, held yesterday at the National Sports Centre.

The events were the latest in the 2016/17 Sure Sports Primary School Programme, which is sponsored by the telecoms firm and run by Manx Sport and Recreation (MSR) – part of the Department of Education and Children.

A team from Laxey Primary won the final and was presented with a trophy by Josh Green, the Island’s Hockey Development Officer.

Teams from Andreas, Buchan, Ballasalla, Vallajeelt, Cronk-y-Berry, Onchan, Kewaigue, St John’s and Michael also made the finals.

Hockey is one of seven sports in the programme, which encourages pupils to get active and enjoy sport.

Kirsty Cooper, Sports Development Officer with MSR, said:

‘Encouraging physical activity among the young and increasing the number of children who regularly take part in sport are objectives of Manx Sport and Recreation’s Strategy for Sport 2014-2024

‘The hockey tournament involved 53 teams and more than 500 Year 3 and 4 pupils, who all had a great time.

‘If children enjoy sport early in life, this can lead to a lifelong passion or hobby, with resulting benefits of an active lifestyle.’

The Sure Sports Primary School Programme started with rugby and badminton last term and continues with golf and netball next month, kwik cricket in May and athletics in June.

Sarah Jarvis, Marketing and PR Manager for Sure Isle of Man, said:

‘Sure is proud to be introducing so many primary school pupils to the benefits of staying fit and active through this programme, one of a number we support.’
