Foundation programme for junior hospital doctors

After medical students graduate, they enter a 2-year Foundation Programme. The programme ensures that each doctor is equipped with the most important skills and aptitudes they will need as a doctor in the National Health Service. To this end, a structured educational programme, underpinned by workplace based competence assessments, career advice and a formal curriculum to guide doctors through the early years of training is provided.

Foundation Year 1 (F1):

The first year of the Foundation Programme builds upon the knowledge, skills and competences acquired in undergraduate training. In order to attain full registration with the General Medical Council ('GMC'), doctors must achieve specific competencies by the end of Foundation Year 1.

At Nobles Hospital you will rotate through various areas within medical and surgical directorates and also gain certificates in ALERT and Immediate Life Support ('ILS')

Foundation Year 2 (F2):

The second year of the Foundation Programme builds upon the first year of training. The F2 year's main focus is on training in the assessment and management of the acutely ill patient. Training also encompasses the generic professional skills applicable to all areas of medicine – team work, time management, communication and IT skills.

At Noble's Hospital you will have an opportunity to undertake a specialty 'taster' and also gain certificates in IMPACT and Advanced Life Support ('ALS').

E-portfolio:

All foundation doctors have access to an electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) which includes the following sections:

  • Personal and Professional Development Plan ('PDP')
  • Meetings with your educational and clinical supervisors
  • Workplace-based assessments
  • Reflective reports and other evidence
  • Sign-off documents

The GMC continues to have overall responsibility for education by setting the standards of training for the Foundation Programme.
