Monday to Thursday 9:15am to 5pm

Parents

When discussing career plans with your child remember:

• to suggest that they attend the annual careers convention and other careers-related events
• impartial individual guidance on GCSE subject choices and career options is offered to year 11 students
• all schools have a careers library and books are available for reference or loan
• careers guidance is an important part of the process of applying for higher education and year 12 and 13 students are encouraged to discuss their plans with a careers adviser to obtain independent impartial advice

Teachers

The Careers Service supports schools careers co-ordinators by providing information and advice. We have a range of resources to assist you if:

• you are involved with the careers education/citizenship/PS HE programmes and need ideas for delivering lessons to pupils
• you are a form tutor an require information for members of your tutor group
• you are examining careers related to the subject you teach as a class exercise
• you are researching courses which will personally benefit you and require information or advice

Confidential careers guidance is also available on request.

Employers

The Careers Service and the Jobcentre work with Training Services to help employers to recruit young people. The Service also offers information and advice on current salary scales, providing work experience placements for secondary school students and legislation affecting the employment of young people.

Please keep us updated on developments within your organisation including work opportunities and skills/qualifications required. Our careers advisers regularly visit employers to keep themselves updated and would welcome the opportunity to visit you.

Moving to the Isle of Man

Work permits are usually required for those who have not been educated in the Isle of Man or have lived here for less than five years. The rules are complex and we advise you to contact the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development for more information about Work Permits.

Secondary and primary schools have catchment areas and further details can be obtained from the Department of Education.

If your children are over 16 they may require a work permit if not remaining in full-time education and for those aged 15 and over we will be pleased to advise on local opportunities.
