Careers and Employability in schools
Island Businesses often express an interest in working with young people in schools to support their developing understanding of employability skills as well as contributing to school Careers Advice and Guidance. Engaging with schools in this way represents a resource commitment for employers. The amount of time a business can allocate to working with schools in this way will vary. By working in partnership with schools businesses can provide support and input that complements school delivery of aspects of the curriculum related to Employability and Careers Advice and Guidance. The commitment from a business to supporting schools can be a little as a couple of hours a year if they volunteer.
The 2017 Careers Framework is a guidance document that will help schools to continue to plan, deliver and review careers programmes that meet the range of needs of learners at different ages and stages of development.
It is also a useful document for employers and others working with children and young people as it helps support wider understanding of how their contributions can complement school careers, employability and enterprise education programmes.
Key Stage 4 Work Experience Places
Local employers are key in supporting Work Experience opportunities on the Island as all Key Stage 4 pupils aged 15 to 16 years old have the chance to undertake a one or two week Work Experience placement as part of the curriculum offer. You can register to become a Work Experience setting on the Employed.im website or alternatively by contacting the Employed.im Work Experience Co-ordinator Lorna Trevethan or Carrie Yates to discuss this further.
Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement is a charity organisation that works across both Primary and Secondary schools on the Island. They offer a range of programmes and staff who volunteer to deliver Junior Achievement programmes undergo training in presenting to children and young people and are then supported through initial delivery by more experienced JA volunteers and staff.

Inspiring the Future IOM
Inspiring the Future IOM is a website that is supported by the Education and Employers Charity group and puts together employers and schools to support work on employability and careers with young people. Please follow the step by step guide to registration as a school, as a volunteer or as an employer. Volunteers in England have so far come from many walks of life and from a variety of backgrounds. They range from young apprentices to chief executives, archaeologists to zoologists, firefighters to doctors, engineers to pharmacists, academic research assistants to vice-chancellors of universities. Thousands of volunteers from small, medium sized and multi-national companies have already signed up and dozens more are registering every day as the word spreads and the project grows.
Employment and Skills Event (November of Each Year)
In November of each year the Department of Education Sport and Culture host an Employment and Skills Event in the Villa Marina. This is an opportunity for employers in different sectors to network with each other and for young people and the general public to explore Career opportunities on the Isle of Man. Careers Advisers
There are two Careers Advisers who work across DESC schools and UCM to provide Independent Careers Advice and Guidance. If you as a company would like to engage with supporting them in delivering Careers lessons in IOM schools/UCM then you can contact the Careers Advisers through the main DESC enquiry email admin@doe.gov.im or by calling +44 1624 685820.
Employment advice for adults is available from the JobCentre team who can be contacted by calling +44 1624 687014 or emailing jobcentre@gov.im
Althernatively you can book an appointment with a JobCentre advisor by filling out their Careers Guidance Appointment Request Form.

Monday to Thursday: 9am to 5pm
Friday: 9am to 4.30pm
