Open Day to highlight support available for vulnerable individual and families

Thursday, 1 December 2016

For many people Christmas is a joyous time of year spent in the company of family and friends.

However, for others in our community the festive season can be an incredibly difficult time filled with sadness, self-reflection, loneliness, anxiety and even violence.

The Christmas and New Year holidays represent one of the busiest periods for frontline staff working in the Island’s emergency services and at Noble’s Hospital. A number of local charities also experience a sharp increase in demand for their services during December, particularly in connection with mental health and alcohol-related matters.

A special event is being held at Tromode House this month to highlight the wide range of support that is available in the Isle of Man. Organised by the Prison and Probation Service at the Department of Home Affairs, the open day will provide information, guidance and assistance from a host of Government agencies and Island charities.

Members of the public are invited to attend Tromode House between 3pm and 7pm on Tuesday 13 December. The building, which is the new hub for the Island’s probation staff, will be signposted from Ballafletcher Road and Johnny Watterson’s Lane, with parking available at the rear of Isle of Man Creameries.

As well as providing support on matters such as homelessness, loneliness, depression and domestic abuse, the event will also offer practical advice on staying safe, maintaining physical and mental wellbeing and preventing crime.

The format will include presentations, information stands and an opportunity for one-to-one discussions with representatives of the following organisations –

Prison and Probation Service

Isle of Man Constabulary

St John Ambulance

Victim Support

Samaritans

Children’s Centre

Graih (homeless charity)

Mental Wellbeing

Housing Matters

Drug & Alcohol Team

Prison Works

Manx SPCA

Salvation Army

Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service

Home Affairs Minister Bill Malarkey MHK, said:

‘Many people find it difficult to cope at Christmas for a variety of reasons. We are working to spread the message that help is at hand for those in need. The open day has been arranged by members of our staff to put people in touch with organisations who can offer potentially life-changing support.’

Geraldine Martin, Head of Community Rehabilitation at the Prison and Probation Service, added:

‘I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to Tromode House on 13 December. Even if people are not experiencing any difficulties themselves, they may have relatives, friends or neighbours who would benefit from some advice and assistance. The Isle of Man is an inclusive and caring community with a track record of helping people in their hour of need. Our event is aimed at promoting awareness of the many services available in the Island to help those who find the festive season a particularly stressful time.’
