Securing the economy, transport connectivity, border security and the delivery of public services were the key themes at the third Isle of Man Government Conference held at the Comis Hotel in Santon this week (Tuesday to Wednesday 17 to 18 September).
An audience totalling almost 600 people attended the two-day event and took the chance to hear from and engage with the Chief Minister, Ministers, senior officers and guest speakers on a broad range of topics.
Setting the scene for the conference in his opening address, Chief Minister Alfred Cannan MHK pointed to the immediate need for Government to focus on the ‘Secure’ element of the Island Plan’s ‘Secure, Vibrant and Sustainable’ vision. He said:
‘Stability, security and safety will be the watchwords. I want you and your families to feel physically and environmentally safe, fiscally and economically safe and to be safe in the knowledge that despite the difficult challenges all around us we continue to make progress, working together, as a strong, stable and proud Island nation.’
A revised conference format saw all presentations, workshops and question-and-answer sessions taking place in a single room. The approach enabled all attendees to focus on specific issues as the event progressed and was introduced in response to feedback from previous conferences held at the Villa Marina in Douglas.
In addition to the key themes, the conference included sessions on workforce and skills, the local economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, tourism and the Island’s Biosphere status.
Reflecting on the event, the Chief Minister said:
‘The conference is now in its third year and is invaluable in helping to gain a greater understanding of the issues on people’s minds and to stimulate engagement in a positive way.
‘The event does, of course, provide an important platform for government to make announcements and provide context around the challenges and opportunities facing our community.
‘However, talking to people about their priorities is where the value really lies and I have already committed to holding another set of roadshows next spring, with the Council of Ministers engaging at events Island-wide.’
He added:
‘I’d like to thank everyone who attended and invite them to provide feedback on what worked well and how the event may be improved in the future.’
