Summer internship programme

Business Isle of Man, an Executive Agency of the Department for Enterprise, is encouraging individuals and businesses interested in the Summer Internship Programme to send in their application to take part or to host an intern ahead of the closing date next Wednesday 30 September.

The programme is focused for individuals aged 18 -25 however, anyone can apply. The scheme was one of the first initiatives to be supported under the £100m Economic Recovery Fund that was announced by Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan MHK in his budget update to July’s Tynwald.

The internship programme provides full wage support at a weekly rate of £256 per week for businesses, third sector and other organisations. Placements last for an average of 6 weeks, with flexible options for them to run for shorter or longer periods if required, based on project availability and study commencement dates.

Organisations are matched with young people and students who are looking to gain real world work experience, build their CV and develop interpersonal skills.

Minister for Enterprise, Laurence Skelly MHK, commented:

‘I’m delighted with the take-up so far from both students and local businesses with the departments Summer Internship Programme. Internships are proven to deliver huge benefits, both for the individual and the business involved. This programme not only provides direct opportunities for young people to improve their employability and skills for the future, but has supported local businesses with additional resource to help with specific projects or coronavirus recovery work. I strongly encourage any young people and businesses who are interested to apply ahead of the deadline next week.’

John Keggin, owner of Island Escapes said:

‘As a business heavily reliant upon tourism, 2020 has been an extremely challenging year for us. We have had to adapt our business model to resonate with the local market alongside undertaking coronavirus recovery work. Recruiting at a time like this has also felt extremely uneasy. When I heard about the Summer Internship Scheme, I eagerly jumped at the chance to participate in order to gain the much needed resource the business required.

‘The scheme helped us to find a fantastic match for the skillsets we required through Nick Venables. Nick was invaluable in assisting us with an email marketing strategy that will now act as a key feature of our communications as it enables us to build our database and stakeholder engagement. This scheme has undoubtedly helped us as a business to move forward which we’re confident in turn will help us to bounce back much quicker.’

Placements could focus on a wide range of business functions, such as website development, undertaking research work, setting up an IT system, social media audits or graphic design projects.

The deadline for individuals and businesses to apply is Wednesday 30 September. Further information and forms to sign up for the programme are available from: www.businessisleofman.com/internships
