Rules of the Air
The Isle of Man has implemented the requirements of Annex 2 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (known as the ‘Chicago Convention’) through the Civil Aviation (Rules of the Air) Order 20211 (‘the Order’). The Order applies to:
- all aircraft, air traffic service units, aerodrome operators and ground personnel engaged in aircraft operation within the Isle of Man (other than military units or small unmanned aircraft); and
- all Isle of Man registered aircraft wherever they may be unless it is necessary for the pilot to depart from the Rules in order to avoid immediate danger or to comply with the law of any country over which the aircraft is being flown.
The Order and consequential permissions and exemptions ensure that the Island’s Rules of the Air legislation matches that of the UK, allowing for seamless transition between UK and Isle of Man airspace. Consequently, the Order brings into Isle of Man law, with appropriate amendments, the requirements of:
- EU Standard European Rules of the Air (SERA); and
- UK Rules of the Air Regulations.
CAA Publication CP15 consolidates the provisions of the Civil Aviation (Rules of the Air) Order 2021 and related General Permissions, Exemptions and Authorisations issued by the Isle of Man CAA. EASA Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) and Guidance Material to SERA are also included.
