Meteorological Services to Air Navigation
Objectives
The objective of meteorological service for international air navigation is to contribute towards the safety, regularity and efficiency of international air navigation by supplying the following users with the meteorological information needed to perform their functions:
- aircraft operators
- flight crew members
- air traffic services units
- search and rescue services units
- airport managements and others concerned with the conduct or development of international air navigation
Meteorological Authority and Meteorological Service Provider
The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requires States to designate a Meteorological Authority to provide or arranging for the provision of meteorological service for international air navigation on behalf.
The Isle of Man Civil Aviation Administration (IOM CAA) is the Islands 'Meteorological Authority', and will promulgate appropriate and complete legislation and policy on meteorological services for international air navigation, and assess and record compliance with Annex 3 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation. The IOM CAA also has a direct responsibility for the safety oversight of meteorological services for international air navigation in the Isle of Man.
The IOM CAA also ensures that meteorological services for international air navigation are provided on its behalf by Isle of Man Airport in its role as the 'Meteorological Service Provider' and the meteorological office associated with Isle of Man Airport Air Traffic Control (ATC).
