Honey

Veterinary medicine residue sampling of honey samples commenced in November 2019 and we must submit samples for analysis each year.  

A honey sample will consist of a 250ml honey jar approximately half-filled. This will be taken by a DEFA Authorised Officer. To validate the sampling the Officer requires the respective bee-keeper to witness and countersign the tamperproof bag that the sample is placed in. Depending on the time of sampling, it may be undertaken in different ways. For example, it can be by scraping the honey from the comb using a sterile scoop from the super or brood chamber.  Alternatively, we can sample recently extracted honey in bulk or from the bee-keepers extractor or settling tank. The honey should be sampled when the honey has been extracted, bottled or recently stored. For the year 2020, we are required to submit 12 samples. 

Samples are then sent to a UK laboratory for analysis.
