Approved places on the Isle of Man for ceremonies

Locations for ceremonies may be indoor or outdoor (if outdoor, an alternative indoor venue within walking distance must be available in case of inclement weather), aircraft (within Manx airspace), vessels (within Manx territorial waters) or vehicles and must be seemly and dignified.

There are two types of approval available on the Isle of Man:

1. An owner/proprietor/trustee wishing to apply for 3 year Place Approval must do so by completing the relevant application Form S2, supplying the requested documentation and a cheque for the prescribed fee made payable to the 'Isle of Man Government', sending them to the Civil Registry, Deemsters Walk, Bucks Road, Douglas, IM1 3AR. An application form can only be used in respect of one place but must include details of a private interview room and may include more than one location within that place.
   
   
2. A couple who wish to apply for Consent of the Registrar General for a ceremony at a one-off location should complete the relevant application form (S4B Form for a venue / S4D Form for an aircraft; vehicle; vessel) and supply the requested documentation and enclosing a cheque for the prescribed fee made payable to 'Isle of Man Government', sending them to the Civil Registry, Deemsters Walk, Bucks Road, Douglas, IM1 3AR.

Please note that there is a non-refundable application fee of £225 and that additional prescribed fees will be payable at notice. Please allow a minimum of 42 days for the approval process to take place.

An inspection of the venue/aircraft/vehicle/vessel will be arranged by a Civil Registry representative as to its suitability and to ensure it meets the criteria within the guidance issued by the Clerk of Rolls. The Civil Registry will report back to you and will either approve, reject or supply a list of adjustments for the venue/aircraft/vehicle/vessel to make.

Time frames for processing applications will vary according to each application and often depend on the nature of the venue. A renewal application can be submitted anytime during the final 6 months of the current approval. The place, aircraft, vessel or vehicle will be inspected for suitability by a representative of the Civil Registry as part of the application process. Once approval has been granted, the place, aircraft, vessel or vehicle will be issued with a Certificate of Approval and Appendix for each location. Conditions may be imposed on the Appendix by the Registrar General.

Places wishing to apply to become an Approved Place should not advertise or take bookings for any civil marriage or civil partnership ceremonies until the application is complete and approval has been granted.

The Town Hall is the right choice for all due to the excellent flexibility afforded to the Happy Couple in choosing how they wish to have their special occasion. The main hall seats a maximum of 150 people, and there are 2 smaller rooms, with a maximum limit of 40 persons. The Board Room in particular offers a very characterful room for an intimate wedding ceremony. It is often possible to hire the Board Room for the Wedding Ceremony and then continue upstairs to the Town Hall for the reception.
