Family Support Payment

Family Support Payments are intended to help families who get child benefit with the recent increases in the costs of oil, gas and electricity.

You don’t need to make a claim for a Family Support Payment. A Family Support Payment will be paid to you automatically during May 2022 if you’re entitled to child benefit for a period which includes 11 April 2022.  It will be paid to you in the same way as your child benefit is paid to you.

The amount of Family Support Payment you’ll get is explained below.

You may get a Family Support Payment even if you (or your partner) have received an Energy Support Payment.

Family Support Payments don’t affect entitlement to any other social security benefit you may get.

You won’t get a Family Support Payment if you’re not entitled to child benefit.

Amount of Family Support Payment

The amount of a Family Support Payment you’ll get depends on -

  • how many children or young persons you get child benefit for; and
  • how much “reckonable income” you have been assessed to have for chid benefit purposes (more information about this can be found here).

Basic amount:

Everyone who gets child benefit will get a basic amount. The amount you’ll get is shown in the table below –

Amount of incomeAmount of basic family support payment
£50,000 or less £300.00
More than £50,000 but not more than £60,000 £225.00
More than £60,000 but not more than £70,000 £150.00
More than £70,000 but not more than £80,000 £75.00

Additional amounts:

If you get child benefit for 2 children, or for one child and one young person, you’ll also get an additional amount of £50.00.

Or, if you get child benefit for 3 or more children, or the total number of children and qualifying young persons you get child benefit for is 3 or more, you’ll get an additional amount of £100.00.

Unlike the basic amount, these additional amounts are not reduced if your reckonable income is more than £50,000.
