PPV Driver Application Forms

Below you will find all of the relevant application forms and packs to become a PPV Driver, or to renew an existing PPV Driver Licence:

Individual Forms

Becoming a PPV Driver

There are multiple steps to becoming a PPV Driver, and this section will outline these steps in the order you should carry them out.

PPV Driver Application Form

To become a PPV driver, a PPV Driver Application Form must be completed in full. Within the application form there is a section to obtain two references. Your primary reference is also required to sign the declaration section of the application form located on the back page. Guidance notes are available to assist with the application process.

DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) Application

Every PPV driver, including those who are renewing an existing licence, is required to complete an application for a DBS certificate. The certificate must have been issued within 12 months at the point of application and must be an enhanced certificate that covers the type of driving you are required to do - for example if you are going to be transporting both children and adults then your DBS certificate should cover both children and adults as well. For those applicants who are wishing to drive for Bus Vannin, a DBS application can be completed via their recruitment team located at Banks Circus. For all other applicants an appointment must be made to complete the form at the RTLC office. DBS Guidance notes are available to explain this a bit further.

Knowledge Test

Applicants wishing to 'Ply For Hire' will need to take a knowledge test as part of the application process. This is taken at the RTLC office and can be booked by emailing the RTLC . The test is 75 minutes long and is carried out under test conditions. The questions on the test will vary depending on which area the applicant is wishing to drive in – for example, those applicants wishing to drive in Douglas or Onchan areas will need to take an east test. The first test is free as part of your application, but any subsequent tests cost £20 each. You are afforded a maximum of 3 attempts before your application is deferred for 6 months. The best way to prepare for the test is to study the area you wish to drive by taking a drive around the area and studying the maps in the phonebook and/or on Google.

Bus Test Pass Certificate / Proof of Bus Driver Experience

For anyone wishing to drive minibuses/buses we will require a pass certificate from the testing centre, which is similar to the one given out for passing a regular driving test. Without this certificate it will not be possible to issue your PPV Driver Licence.

GP Medical Form

All new applicants are required to undergo a medical with the GP. Those wishing to renew will have to provide another one of these medicals if they are aged 50 or over at the time of renewal, and then annually (regardless of whether their licence is due for renewal or not) once they reach the age of 65, with the first being in time for their 65th birthday. Medical forms are available at the RTLC office, as well as on the RTLC website.
