About PPV Drivers

All Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) Drivers must be licensed with the RTLC, and are issued with a Driver Badge which must be worn or displayed in a visible position at all times.

The front of the badge displays the licence number, photograph, and the licence expiry date. The reverse of the badge indicates the type of vehicle(s) which the driver is authorised to drive, e.g. Ply for Hire Car up to 8 seats (taxi).

Code of Conduct has been issued for Taxi and Private Hire Car and Minibus Drivers, and this document can be sourced through the link at the bottom of this page.

Training Courses available to PPV Drivers

Safeguarding & Customer Service

The Road Transport Licensing Committee (“the RTLC”) is working towards introducing safeguarding and customer service training for new PPV drivers.  Once the training has been finalised, it is envisioned that new drivers will attend a course prior to obtaining their PPV licence and existing drivers will attend during the term of their current PPV licence.  Similar training courses are taking place in many local authorities in the UK, and are aimed at raising standards and awareness following recent high-profile safeguarding scandals in Rotherham and Oldham.

The course focuses on two parts:

  • Customer Care - to assist Drivers in identifying the required standard and quality of service to the public
  • Dealing with difficult customers - to assist Drivers in dealing effectively with complaints and difficult behaviour from a customer who feels their expectations have not been met

If you would like to attend the Customer Service or would like further information on the course, please contact the RTLC office.
