Public Rights of Way (PROWs)

There are 316km of Public Rights of Way on the Island.

Public Rights of Way are routes where the public have a right to pass and re-pass. Depending on whether this is a footpath, cycle-path or bridle-path will depend on the legal right of various users along the PROW.

  • Bicycles and horses should not be taken onto public footpaths.
  • Horses should not be taken onto cycle-paths.
  • Horses can be led or ridden along bridle-paths (traps and carriages must be used on highways only).
  • Walkers are allowed to take dogs on Public Rights of Way, but they must be kept under close control (either on a lead, walking to heel or demonstrating excellent recall).
  • The right of passage is along the PROW only. Many PROWs cross private land and deviation from a PROW constitutes trespassing.
