Controlled explosion on Castletown beach

Friday, 2 March 2018

A controlled explosion took place on Castletown beach yesterday afternoon (Thursday) following the discovery of ordnance dating back to the Second World War.

The object was reported by a member of the public on Monday, 200 metres east of the car park at Hango Hill.

Photos were immediately sent to the British military Explosive Ordnance Disposal coordination centre and the object was identified as ordnance from the 1940s.

Castletown Coastguard kept the area safe and under observation until members of the Army Bomb Disposal Unit were able travel to the Island and undertake a controlled explosion.

People are reminded to contact the Coastguard straight away using 999 if they locate an unusual or suspicious object on the coast.
