Following its official opening on the 20 January 2012, the Department of Infrastructure’s new Northern Civic Amenity Site at Balladoole Farm has received over 2000 visits by residents wanting to use the new site to reuse, recycle or dispose of household waste.
As part of the communication plan regarding the new site and its opening, the Department issued a users guide to the new Northern Civic Amenity site to all households in the North. This leaflet provided details on what type of materials could be reused and recycled at the site, and its location just outside of Ramsey on the road heading north. The site now averages a new visitor every 5 minutes.
The new reuse centre has been particularly popular with a quick turnaround of items. Items left and taken for reuse have included tables, chairs, bicycles, doors, window frames, books and several boxes of unused pint glasses, that were reportedly quickly snapped up!
The site’s efficiency has also been improved through the use of a mechanical compactor that has meant better use of skips leaving the site destined for the Energy from Waste Plant, reducing the number of trips south and saving money.
Graham Cregeen MHK said today:
'By relocating the site closer to Ramsey the Department did anticipate an increase in usage; however, these figures have surpassed our expectations and I am pleased that residents of the North appear to be happy with their new reuse and recycling facility. With everyone’s help, I am sure we can surpass the 60% recycling target we have set for the site.'
The Northern Local Authorities supported by the Department can be proud of the service that they are now offering their residents.
