Tynwald Members will be asked to consider a proposal to extend Port Erin’s boundary to include the whole of the Ballakilley estate at this month’s sitting.
If approved, the Port Erin (Boundary Extension) Order 2019 will result in 78 properties currently in the district of Rushen becoming part of Port Erin Village from April 2020, in line with homeowners in the rest of the estate. As this will result in a change in the rates paid by the affected residents, a transitional arrangement would be put in place to allow them to pay a rate which increases gradually each year for 10 years.
When an application to extend a boundary is received, the law requires that a public inquiry is held to provide stakeholders and interested parties with the opportunity to comment on the proposals.
A public consultation took place during August and September 2018, and this was followed by a public inquiry, chaired by Mr Geoff Karran MBE and held at Castletown Civic Centre on March 4 this year.
A report was then presented to the Department of Infrastructure recommending approval for the boundary extension.
Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer MHK said:
‘A thorough and rigorous process has taken place in getting us to this stage, and I am now in a position to seek approval for the boundary to be extended to include the whole of the Ballakilley estate.
‘The consultation and public enquiry stages are extremely important in allowing people to have their voices heard and to ensure all views are considered prior to any recommendation being made.’
