CCTV Policy

The Department of Infrastructure (the Department) uses information collected via CCTV camera systems across its bus network. More detailed information is available in the Department's CCTV Policy which describes how long the information is kept and the limited circumstances in which we might disclose this to third parties

Why does the Department operate CCTV systems?

The DOI operates CCTV systems for the following main purposes:

  1. Health and safety of employees, passengers and other members of the public
  2. Prevention and detection of crime and anti-social behaviour
  3. Security of Department buildings.

Where does the DOI operate CCTV?

The Department operates CCTV in the following locations: At all Department owned stations, buildings, car parks and on our public transport systems.

How long does the Department keep CCTV images?

Recorded CCTV footage is only retained for a limited period of time, although this is dependent upon the purpose of its use. The retention period can vary according to the location and device capabilities, but is usually in the region of one month. 

Any images captured for the prevention and detection of crime can be retained for a longer period, dependent upon the nature of the offence.

Does the Department receive requests from the Police for the disclosure of personal information captured on CCTV systems?

Yes. At the Department's discretion we may disclose personal data in response to lawful requests from the police and other statutory law enforcement agencies.

Before we authorise any disclosure, the police have to demonstrate that the personal data concerned will assist them in the prevention and detection of a specified crime, or the apprehension or prosecution of an offender.

Each request from the police is dealt with on a strict case-by-case basis to ensure that any such disclosure is lawful and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2002.

Does the Department share CCTV footage with any other third parties?

Yes, but only in very limited circumstances. As with disclosures to the police, each request is dealt with on a case-by-case basis to ensure that any such disclosure is lawful and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2002.

We may also disclose personal data if required to do so by law. The Data Protection Act 2002 allows us to do this where the request is supported by evidence of the relevant legislation which requires the disclosure, or alternatively a Court Order.

How can I access information? 

If you require access to the images of yourself recorded by a CCTV camera, or any other information held by the Public Transport Division, you should contact the Division in writing at the address below, or email Public Transport. You can also find information from signage displayed both within and externally on each of the buses fitted with CCTV equipment that are operated by the Division.
