CCTV Policy FAQs

The Department operates its CCTV systems in order to capture and monitor images of what takes place in specific locations in real time. Depending on the type of device the images are recorded continuously. Cameras located on buses are fixed to record a distance of 15m in front of the bus, and 5m behind the bus; side cameras fitted at the front and showing a rearward view are fitted and functioning, but do not record at this time.

The cameras are used for primarily for the health, safety and security of passengers and members of the public, but are also used when accidents have taken place involving public transport vehicles.

The Department of Infrastructure operates CCTV systems for the following main purposes:

• Health and safety of employees, passengers and other members of the public
• Prevention and detection of crime and anti-social behaviour
• Security of Department buildings

The Department of Infrastructure operates CCTV in the following locations:

• At all Department owned stations, buildings, car parks and on our public transport systems

Recorded CCTV footage is only retained for a limited period of time, although this is dependent upon the purpose of its use. The retention period is 10 days. 

The retention period can vary according to the location and device capabilities, but is usually in the region of one month.

Yes. At the Department's discretion we may disclose personal data in response to lawful requests from the police and other statutory law enforcement agencies.

Before we authorise any disclosure, the police have to demonstrate that the personal data concerned will assist them in the prevention and detection of a specified crime, or the apprehension or prosecution of an offender.

Each request from the police is dealt with on a strict case-by-case basis to ensure that any such disclosure is lawful and in accordance with the Data Protection (Application of GDPR) Order 2018.
