The Quarries Section provides the Island's industries, both private and public sector, with a wide range of aggregate and asphalt products. It currently operates two quarries, Poortown near Peel, and Stoney Mountain near Foxdale. The quarries provide the main sources of aggregates for highway construction on the Island.

Poortown Quarry

  • Extracts a type of rock called Dolerite, known locally as Gabbro
  • This is particularly suitable for use in the production road surfacing materials.

  • The asphalt production plant where the processed aggregate is combined with a coal-black binder to provide high quality surfacing materials.

Stoney Mountain Quarry

  • Extracts granite which is processed to make materials
  • Large rock armour for riverbank stabilisation or coastal defence works

  • Smaller stone chippings for use as structural fill and in drainage work

  • Provides secondary aggregates recycled from excavated highway material, helping to increase the sustainability of the Department's operations

The Quarries also provides the following:

  • Technical advice and training

  • Heavy equipment with operators for emergency works such as snow clearance

  • Facilities for meetings and training for use throughout government
