Island Wide Wound Formulary
Wound management and the selection of dressing products was generally not organised or delivered in a uniform fashion. There was no standardised assessment criteria for wounds or treatment pathway on the Island, which would guide practitioners in their dressing choice.
This led to evidence of custom and practice and wound treatment plans were left to practitioner's personal choice. Add to this the rising cost of dressing use and it became obvious that a Wound Formulary was needed urgently.

Ophthalmology Waiting List Initiative
The Ophthalmology Waiting List Project was initiated in response to excessively long waiting times for cataract surgery. Waiting List Initiative monies were available on the Island; however, there was insufficient capacity within the Consultant sessions at Noble’s Hospital to reduce the Isle of Man waiting times in line with UK best practice.
A working party considered a number of options for the provision of this much needed Waiting List Initiative (WLI), these being:
1) off Island operations, 2) purchase services of a mobile theatre company, 3) offer additional work to current team at Noble’s Hospital, 4) buy in services of a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Team, 5) use of Ramsey Community Hospital Operating Theatre and staff. It was agreed that the Waiting List Initiative would be undertaken at Ramsey Community Hospital.

Ambulance Service Community First Responder Project
Like other ambulance services we started to explore the possibility of creating what is known as Community First Responders (CFRs) to respond to life threatening emergencies in remote rural areas. We had been one of the first Ambulance Services to be accredited to train CFRs and had in fact conducted an earlier trial with the Douglas Fire Crews but due to their own commitments it was difficult for the Fire Service to fulfil this role.
We therefore turned our attention to setting up our own local CFR scheme and after discussing the matter with volunteer agencies here on the Island it was decided that a partnership with the St John Ambulance would be the best way forwards.

The Introduction of the District Nurse Treatment Room
The District Nurse treatment room is a new way of working for District Nurses.
Traditionally the majority of contacts made by District Nurses have been made for patients within their own homes and residential homes. Changes to population demography, increased life expectancy, lifestyle patterns, and improved management of long term conditions combined with earlier discharge from hospital, changes to GP contracts, and individual patient expectation and demand, has led to a vast increase in referrals to the District Nursing Services of patients that are not housebound.

The event was opened by the Chief Executive Officer David Killip who stated:

I congratulate all the finalists and especially the winners who triumphed in the face of top-quality work from their colleagues in the other teams. This illustrates once more the levels of innovation and professionalism to be found throughout the Department.'
