Legislation

The Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate enforces a number of primary and secondary legislation throughout the Isle of Man.

The Health and Safety at Work Order 2024 brings into law the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (of Parliament) which is the islands primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety on the Isle of Man.

This Act sets out general duties which:

  • Employees have towards employees and members of the public
  • Employees have to themselves and to each other
  • Certain self-employed have towards themselves and others

The islands health and safety legislation is broadly based on that of the United Kingdom’s however; it is important to note that as a crown dependency the Isle of Man has its own suite of health and safety legislation.

UK legislation and their associated codes of practice is best viewed as an illustration of good practice which may be helpful in explaining the general duties imposed by the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

Copies of the islands legislation and their revisions are accessible through the Tynwald library however; please find below links to the most commonly used health and safety legislation and regulations.
