Anglers reassured following trout farm incident

Wednesday, 20 June 2018

Anglers in the Isle of Man are being assured that fish stocks for the Island’s reservoirs are unaffected following the death of 4,500 fish at Glen Wyllin trout farm.

In the early hours of Monday 11 June, someone entered the farm owned by Troutlodge and turned off a compressor, which caused tanks on the farm to be starved of oxygen, leading to the death of approximately 4,500 rainbow trout.

The fish were due to produce eggs for the global export market later this year.

The Isle of Man Constabulary has appealed to the public for information.

Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture, Geoffrey Boot MHK, said:

'This is a shocking and concerning incident and I urge anyone with relevant information to assist the Police in their investigations.

'For several years, Troutlodge has been supplying the Island’s reservoirs with rainbow trout of exceptional quality as part of the agreement covering the company’s lease of the Government-owned fish farm at Cornaa, Maughold.

'Fortunately the majority of the trout destined for the reservoirs are held at Cornaa and I can reassure anglers that the incident at Glen Wyllin is not expected to have any impact on reservoir stocking.'

Anyone with information regarding the incident is requested to contact PC51 Hewitt at Peel Police station on 01624 842208.  Alternatively, information can be passed on anonymously either by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
