The Department of Environment, Food & Agriculture is to introduce a visitor gifting scheme for the Sulby Claddaghs. The scheme, called Caring for the Claddagh, will encourage visitors to this popular venue to make a contribution to its upkeep by way of a donation. Whilst predominantly aimed at campers, it is hoped that others, including local businesses, will also contribute in some way.
All monies received from the scheme will go towards the day-to-day management and upkeep of Sulby Claddagh including: grass cutting, bin emptying, toilet block cleaning and maintenance, general repairs, tree planting and care and site supervision. Monies will also be used for access improvements and conservation projects in the area.
Sulby Claddagh, which is akin to common land, has played an important part in the life of Sulby village for centuries and, for many people, locals and visitors alike, holds an enduring affection and it has a long and varied history. Records show that from the early 18th century, it was used for an annual Fair and was referred to locally as the Fairground. In recent years, Lezayre Parish Commissioners have returned to this time-honoured tradition by holding an annual ‘Fun Day’ on the Claddagh.
Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the site is an ideal location for all types of recreation and is popular for dog walking, picnicking, school visits, community events, ball games and, of course, seasonal camping. It is also a convenient base from which to explore the local footpaths that lead to Cronk Sumark (Primrose Hill), the Sulby valley and beyond.
Mr. Juan Turner, MLC, Member for Forestry, Amenity and Lands, said:
‘The annual site management costs for the Claddagh have increased in recent years to the point of being unsustainable. Last year, it cost the Department nearly £30,000 for the day-to-day maintenance. Without some form of support from visitors, the Department will have to lower service standards or find other ways of raising income. I hope that the local community and visitors alike will support the visitor gifting scheme for this much loved public amenity.’
