ManxBioMed Cluster launched in the Isle of Man

Friday, 7 December 2012

The Department of Economic Development is supporting a new cluster of businesses which aims to promote the bio-medical sector in the Isle of Man.

The ManxBioMed Cluster aims to identify, select and develop bio-medical global technologies and services to aid health and minimise medical suffering. It will also support early stage, fast-growth companies by working closely with entrepreneurs, scientists and legislators globally.

There are a number of companies already based in the Isle of Man that are involved in the bio¬medical sector such as Bodystat, Prometic Biosciences, Russian Clinical Research, SEQ Ltd, and Panacea Pharma Projects.

John Shimmin MHK, Minister for the Department of Economic Development said:

'The Department of Economic Development is pleased to support this exciting development. This is good news for the Isle of Man and I have no doubt that the Cluster will strengthen the Island's bio-medical industry as well as raise its profile internationally. This initiative will help companies collaborate together to share knowledge, achieve business objectives, increase productivity and engage in greater innovation for the benefit of everyone in the sector and therefore the Island as a whole.'

Courtenay Heading, Inward Investment Advisor, Isle of Man Government and Dr Nikolai (Nik) Nikitin, of Isle of Man-based Russian Clinical Research, are the initiators behind putting the Cluster together. Dr Nikitin has extensive clinical and research experience in cardiovascular medicine, both in the UK and the former Soviet Union. He said:

'The Isle of Man is beginning to be recognised as a location of choice for bio-medical companies. There is no doubt that the Cluster will help promote the small, but growing, bio-medical sector in the Isle of Man which will help to increase local employment.'
