Oliver and Olivia Most Popular Baby Names in Isle of Man

Monday, 19 February 2018

The Civil Registry has revealed its 2017 statistics on births, deaths and marriages, with Oliver and Olivia taking the top spot for most popular names in 2017.

Oliver takes over from Archie and Theo which were last year’s top choices in the Isle of Man. The most popular choice for girls was Olivia, with Evie, Ella, Scarlet, Isla and Amelia not far behind.

Some of the less well-known names registered in 2017 included Ottilie, meaning little wealthy one, and Jaxon, which means God has been gracious.

Key findings:

  • In line with global figures, more boys than girls were born in 2017, with October being the most popular month for registrations.
  • Overall, there was a small decline in the number of births and deaths registered last year
  • The highest number of civil marriages was recorded in the Isle of Man since 2011. Over 60% of civil ceremonies took place at a Registry Office, with August being the most popular month for nuptials

Alongside the Island’s approved places for marriage, the standout venue was the start line for the Ramsey Sprint on the day of the racing for a couple from the UK.

Martyn Perkins MHK, Political Member with responsibility for the Registries, commented:

‘It’s fantastic to see the Isle of Man’s statistics shared publicly and to see the breadth and depth of work carried out by the Civil Registry.’

‘There are many stunning locations all over the Isle of Man for civil ceremonies, and it’s testament to the Island’s natural beauty to see that couples from the UK and farther afield are choosing the Isle of Man for their big day. The Department’s tourism team promote the Isle of Man as a destination for weddings, with the Island’s many unique venues and impressive natural scenery creating the perfect setting for residents and visitors alike. The standout venue was the start line for the Ramsey Sprint on the day of the racing for a couple from the UK, which just goes to shows how the Civil Registry can make that dream come true.'
