The Isle of Man Arts Council has announced the launch of its new student bursaries for 2019/20 to support students studying the arts who are moving into further and higher education.
There will be three bursaries available, each for £10,000, to be awarded to three students over the duration of their arts course:
The Jonathan Gollow Bursary for Performing Arts in memory of the late music promoter Jonathan 'Jonno' Gollow who was a valued member of the Arts Council until 2012 and who sadly passed away suddenly in 2017.
The Norman Sayle Bursary for Visual Art and Literature in memory of the most celebrated Manx artist of recent times, Noman Sayle RI TH (1926-2007) who was also a dedicated teacher and a former Arts Council member.
The Isle of Man Arts Council Bursary is to be awarded to a student whose extenuating personal circumstances may be preventing their further studies within the arts.
Marlene Maska MLC, Chair of the Arts Council and Department Member for Education, Sport and Culture, said:
‘The talent of our Island’s young people is being increasingly recognised beyond our shores and so the opportunity to offer meaningful assistance by re-structuring our Student Bursaries is seen as a major step forward. The Isle of Man Arts Council are also extremely pleased to have gained permission to name two of the awards after such important and prominent artists in their respective fields and we sincerely hope that the recipients will truly benefit from the awards during their developing careers.’
Arts Development Manager, Jane Corkill said:
‘The Isle of Man Arts Council are delighted to launch their new bursaries to support Manx students. There is such talent amongst our young people, the Council hopes that these substantial awards will truly make a difference to the future of the recipients within the arts and the creative industries.’
‘We are also honoured to name the bursaries after two celebrated former Council members, who both played such an important part in the arts in the Isle of Man. Norman Sayle taught at the Douglas School of Art and Isle of Man College and influenced so many young artists in their studies and careers, and Jonno Gollow was also instrumental in the careers of young musicians, most notably Davy Knowles. We hope that, within these bursaries, their influence will continue to live on.’
Applications for the bursaries can be made by the Isle of Man Arts Council website: www.iomarts.com and will close on 1 June 2019, with the three recipients being informed after the Arts Council meeting on 14 June.
