The Isle of Man Government is seeking feedback from members of the public on a draft Education Bill.
The draft Bill which has been drafted by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC), will replace the current Education Act 2001, subject to Tynwald approval, and see a number of key changes to the legislation.
Graham Cregeen MHK, Minister for DESC, said:
'This is an important opportunity for members of the public to have their say on the changes being proposed to the Bill.
'It's crucial that we have an up to date, forward thinking education system on the Isle of Man which will enable us to continue to provide a fantastic and effective education for the Island.
'The Education Act 2001 has been the primary legislation governing what happens in education on the Island since it came into effect in 2004. However, the need for a new, updated Bill has become apparent over recent years and DESC has been reviewing ways in which the department can help deliver this.
'Any feedback that the public have will be gratefully welcomed by the Department, particularly in relation to aspects which have been significantly changed.'
The changes will reflect education practice both in the UK and other jurisdictions, and also seeks to be progressive where possible.
Among some of the changes being proposed are:
- Changes to standards for behaviour of pupils
- Changes to home education arrangements
- Inspection of schools
- School attendance
- Provisions relating to young people with additional educational needs
The New Education Bill consultation will close on 20 March 2019.
