Good news for CRHS students after exam error

Monday, 25 June 2018

Students who sat this year’s IGCSE English Literature exam at Castle Rushen High School (CRHS) are to be given special consideration by the exam board.

Some Year 11 students at the school studied the 2017 rather than the 2018 set-text.

Cambridge International Examinations has confirmed that it will grade the affected CRHS students IGCSE English Literature exam based only on the poetry and prose component and the coursework component. The drama component paper which they sat on 25 May, where the school had taught an out-of-date text, will play no part in their IGCSE English Literature grade award.

The move follows continued negotiations with the exam board by representatives from CRHS and the Department of Education, Sport and Culture

Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, Graham Cregeen MHK, said:

'Both the school and the Department have lobbied hard on this issue.  The response from the exam board is fair and reasonable and the best outcome we could have hoped for. I am sure it will be a relief for students and parents alike after what will have been an unsettling few weeks.

'We are grateful for the exam board’s understanding of the unfortunate circumstances that led to this error and appreciate its support in ensuring students are not adversely affected.'

Headteacher at Castle Rushen, Keith Winstanley, said:

'I once again wish to extend my sincere apologies to the students, parents and carers affected by this issue.  A review is ongoing and any necessary actions will be taken.'
