Opportunity for sport coaches to learn new approach to teaching movement

Tuesday, 27 March 2018

The Isle of Man’s sports coaches have the opportunity to learn more about an innovative and fun approach to teaching children the fundamental movement skills required for success in a variety of sports.

Isle of Man Sport has arranged for Simon Brundish to visit the Island to deliver a workshop for coaches on his ‘superheroes’ approach to teaching children about movement.

During the workshop, coaches will gain an introduction on how they can implement movement training into their sports coaching sessions. The technique uses five superheroes to represent different movement patterns. Coaches can implement a graduated approach to developing key movement skills needed in almost any sport. Young people can even get dressed as their favourite superhero to help make movement training even more fun.

Simon said:

'Movement confidence and competence are crucial in helping young people to develop physically active habits that will stay with them into adulthood. Kids love the superheroes format because it is fun and keeping sport fun, keeps kids in sport.'

The method involves 120 Exercises across 24 gradually increasing levels.

Sports Coaching Coordinator for Isle of Man Sport, Trevor Christian, said:

'Following the popularity and feedback from the 2017 Isle of Man Sport Lecture – which was delivered by Phil Moreland and focussed on physical literacy – there is clearly appetite from coaches for new and practical ideas on how they can develop fundamental movement skills in their coaching sessions.

'This workshop will support coaches in enhancing the delivery of their coaching sessions and improving technique for the Island’s up and coming sports men and women.'

The workshop takes place on Saturday 21 April at St Ninian’s Lower School from 9am to 11.30am.

Coaches interested in attending the workshop can book online at superheroesworkshop.eventbrite.co.uk. Places cost £15 each but those who book before 1 April can get a £5 discount by entering the voucher code EARLYBIRD.

Isle of Man Sport continues to bring a wide variety of CPD events for coaches to get involved with.  To find out more, people can join the Isle of Man Sport Coaches Forum on Facebook to keep up to date with the latest course announcements or they contact Trevor Christian on 688590 / trevor.christian@gov.im.
