Chief Secretary

The Chief Secretary, Mr Will Greenhow, is the head of the Isle of Man Civil Service.

The Chief Secretary’s principal role is to provide impartial policy and management advice to the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers; to provide impartial advice to the Lieutenant Governor; and to provide effective leadership of the Isle of Man Public Service and the Cabinet Office.

Mr Greenhow is a professionally qualified Chartered Management Accountant with 28 years public sector experience gained in both the Isle of Man and UK Governments. He and his wife Tracey moved to the Island in 1999 when he was appointed as the Director of Finance and Research at the Home Affairs Department, where he was the project sponsor for the commissioning of the Emergency Services Joint Control Room and the construction of the Island’s new prison.

He was appointed to the role of Chief Executive of the Department of Home Affairs in 2003 and has led the development of the Department throughout this period. He also currently acts as the chair of the Island’s Safeguarding Children Board and works with his fellow Chief Officers from the Departments of Infrastructure and Economic Development on the delivery of the TT races and other associated motorsport events.

Prior to moving to the Island in 1999 Will was a civil servant in the Ministry of Defence, during which time he qualified as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. He started his career in 1982 at RAF Carlisle, moved to RAF Brampton in Huntingdon and then worked for the MOD in Whitehall.
