Manx charities invited to apply for International Development funding

Monday, 27 March 2017

Applications are now open for Isle of Man registered charities looking for support to deliver International Development projects in developing countries.

Manx charities can apply from today - Monday 27 March 2017 - for ‘Small Grant’ funding from the Isle of Man Government’s International Development budget. The total amount of funding available for Manx projects is £540,000, split across a two year period.

Charities are invited to submit proposals for two-year projects, with priority given to those taking place in one of the 44 countries ranked as ‘Low Development’ on the United Nations Human Development Index. The objectives of each project will need to target one, or more, of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Those seeking funding will be required to have both a physical presence on the Isle of Man and must be registered under the Isle of Man Charities Registration Act 1989. Charities will also need to raise a minimum of 10% of the total funding and include details of how the work will be publicised on the Island.

The Council of Ministers has recently undertaken a review of the mechanisms by which the Isle of Man’s International Development funds are delivered. Small Grants will now be one of five funding streams used by the Cabinet Office to distribute the Isle of Man Government’s £2.4 million annual International Development budget.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHK commented:

‘I am really pleased that we have been able to continue this funding stream for Manx charities to undertake projects in developing countries. The hard work and dedication of local charities has delivered so many great outcomes across the developing world up to now, and I am looking forward to seeing a new raft of project proposals coming forward for funding over the next two years.’

He added:

‘The Isle of Man may be a small nation but we can make a big difference to people’s lives in the developing countries. I believe the changes we have made will help to provide targeted support and make the most effective use of the funding we have available.’

In addition to the ‘Small Grants’, the other four funding streams are:

Global Development and Education Awareness Raising Grant - this will support an Isle of Man registered charity, or charities, to address the Government’s policy objective of raising awareness of global development issues throughout the Manx population.

Disaster and Emergency Relief Budget – reserved for Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Live Appeals for humanitarian disasters.

International Development Partnerships – this will create two-year partnerships with a small number of respected and recognised international charities and will replace the previous Multi-Year grant funding stream from April 2018.

Small Countries Financial Management Programme – which contributes to the growth and prosperity of small countries through capacity building in the government financial sector of small developing countries.

Further details on all the International Development funding streams can be found using the link.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 21 April 2017.
