Chief Minister attends UK trade and industry event

Friday, 9 March 2012

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK continued his programme of engagement with the City this week by attending the Lord Mayor of London’s annual trade and industry gathering.

Mr Bell was among the audience of politicians, business leaders and decision makers to hear Vince Cable MP, the UK Business Secretary, deliver the keynote address. During his speech, Mr Cable provided an overview of the challenges facing the Coalition Government as it attempts to stimulate an economic recovery in the UK.

Mr Bell attended the event at the invitation of Alderman David Wootton, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, who visited the Island in January to deliver the Chief Minister’s International Lecture. The Isle of Man Government is committed to enhancing its links with key figures in Westminster and the City in order to promote a deeper understanding of the Island and its value to the British economy.

The Chief Minister said:

‘The City of London is vitally important to the Isle of Man and we have been working hard to build the Island’s profile there. This week’s visit was part of our growing friendship with the Lord Mayor and provided an opportunity to strengthen our political and business relationships. I was able to have a productive discussion with Vince Cable who was particularly interested in the success of the Isle of Man’s space industry. It was also useful to gain Mr Cable’s personal insight into the direction the UK Government is taking in terms of its strategy for economic recovery.’
