Green Living Grant
The Green Living Grant was approved in July’s sitting Tynwald and its core aim is to reduce emissions from homes on the Island, which account for 20% of all greenhouse emissions through fossil fuel based heating and hot water systems such as oil and natural gas.
The scheme will be run by the Department for Enterprise and is part of Isle of Man Government’s commitment to reach net zero by 2050. The need to incentivise people to retrofit such items forms part of the Government’s action plan to reach this target.
It is expected that the scheme could significantly lower emissions in around 1,200 properties and save nearly 100,000 tonnes of CO2 entering the atmosphere - the equivalent to taking 1,500 cars off the road over the next 30 years.
The scheme is expected to go live in October 2021.
How much you could receive
Up to 50% of the cost of the measures are covered by the grant, up to maximum payment of £6,000 by the Isle of Man Government.
Eligibility
Homeowners, landlords and tenants (with landlord’s permission) with a joint annual income below £112,000 are eligible to apply. To understand your homes emissions rating, a free Manx Home Energy Audit will be undertaken by a qualified domestic energy assessor. The audit will provide you with your current rating, and suggested improvements to improve your rating, in a similar way to an Energy Performance Certificate. These measures will be listed in priority order and they must be undertaken in that order. In order to obtain support a building must be rated a ‘D’ or under by the Audit. Eligible works
- Loft, solid wall, floor insulation
- Double glazing
- Secondary glazing (where double glazing is not appropriate).
- Insulated external doors.
- Hot water cylinder insulation jackets (assuming property does not use combi-boiler).
- Draught proofing of windows, doors and loft hatch as necessary.
- Baffles / dampers to block open chimneys
- Central heating controls such as room thermostats, programmers
- Smart boiler/heater controls,
- Low energy lighting
- Solar PV and Solar Thermal panels
- Low carbon heating alternatives such as:
- Air Source, Ground Source or Water Source Heat Pumps.
- Biomass boilers.
Getting the work done
All contractors undertaking the work must be registered with Construction Isle of Man. In addition, any contractors installing Solar PV, Solar Thermal panels and low carbon heating must be MCS registered.
The applicant will be responsible for sourcing the contractor. The contractor will be paid 50% by the applicant and 50% by Isle of Man Government. You should ensure you are happy with the work carried out before payment
After the work is done
An independent inspection may be carried out to ensure the works have been carried out to a suitable standard before Isle of Man Government pays the contractor.
