Over the next six years, the Department will progress a regional strategy for treating sewage in the north, east and west of the Island.
The original IRIS master plan involved transferring all of the Island’s sewage to the Meary Veg Sewage Treatment Plant in Santon, which now treats sewage from 67% of the Island’s population.
However, following a review, Tynwald backed the development of a regional treatment strategy in 2007, with smaller sewage works treating sewage from those areas currently not connected to Meary Veg.
The IRIS Regional Sewage Treatment Strategy was approved by Tynwald in July 2009 and, subject to the relevant approvals and permissions, it should be completed by 2014/15.
The regional strategy will allow the Department to deliver a completed IRIS project three years ahead of the original strategy, and there will be substantial savings with the regional strategy – approximately £20 million in capital expenditure, and almost £2 million a year in operating costs.
Tynwald approval for the strategy will be followed by an extensive consultation and review period, including environmental impact assessments.
Preferred sewage treatment options for each area have now been identified, along with preferred sites for the local and regional sewage treatment works.
