Adopting a Central Telemetry System
The provision of a reliable water supply is becoming an increasingly more complex process supported by sophisticated electronic and computer based systems. The agreement signed by the Authority and Mitsubishi Electric BV in July 2001, formalised the adoption of a Central Telemetry System (CTS), which monitors the Island's entire water distribution network.
The agreement includes the supply of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's), which are installed in all the Island's pumping stations as well as the new Water Treatment Works at Sulby and Glencrutchery. The installation of the new CTS will provide minute by minute data on the operational status of the Authority's key sites.
The telemetry system will monitor a wide range of parameters such as water pressure, reservoir levels and flow rates and will generate warning alarms at the Authority's Operations Control Room. This allows potential problems to be identified much earlier, resulting in an immediate response, thereby minimising any inconvenience to the customer through loss of supply.
