Who's Pipe is it?

The Water Authority's intricate system of piping spans the whole Island.

In total, it operates 1,200 kilometres (1,308 miles) of mains to which 33,000 service pipes - that's the small diameter pipe from the main on the road to your property - are connected. Depending on when they were laid, these pipes come in a variety of materials; lead, copper, galvanised iron with screw threads and the most modern, pale blue polyethylene.

The Water Authority is responsible for the section of the service pipe from the main in the road to the boundary box in the footpath which houses the stop tap. You are responsible for the section of the pipe under your garden and into your house. It is up to you to maintain and repair it should it burst, although the Authority is always happy to help with free expert advice.

It pays to know where the Authority's stop tap is located, especially in an emergency as it could help minimise damage from a burst pipe or leak. The Authority will turn it off in at any time during the day or night. Don't hesitate, if you are worried call the 24-hour emergency number on 695999.
