Water Byelaws
The Water Byelaws for the Isle of Man substantially reproduce the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. They make provision for preventing contamination and waste of water supplied by the Authority. They do not apply to certain water fittings in connection with water supplied for non-domestic purposes, or to water fittings lawfully installed before the coming into force of the Byelaws. The previous water byelaws needed to be changed as they were acknowledged to be too prescriptive, they made no reference to performance, workmanship or safety and did do not take account of new European harmonisation standards. The Water Byelaws are non-prescriptive wherever possible. They are based on performance and, significantly, they are fewer in number than the previous ones. The Byelaws can be used in conjunction with the Industry's non-statutory guidance document, which can be easily updated and they have been written to incorporate stringent notification procedures.
The Authority is responsible for the enforcement of the legislation, which relates to the prevention of waste, undue consumption, misuse or contamination of water supplied by the Authority, whether for domestic, commercial, agricultural or industrial use.
