Following the completion of the ‘Crystal Project Artwork Challenge’, children from year 5 at Laxey School were invited to see their artwork on display on the road leading to the new Douglas Water Treatment Works site on Greenfield Road.

The Water Authority’s Crystal Project Team invited all of the Island’s primary schools to take part in their ‘Water in Mann’ themed art competition. Assistant Project Sponsor Steve Babb and Mary Doyle, Customer Liaison Co-ordinator for Crystal Project visited all the participating schools providing information on the three schemes and encouraging the children to let their imagination run wild!

The challenge was taken up by 16 of the Island’s schools with James Quayle of St Johns School winning the Judges Favourite and Scott Christian of Scoill Vallajeelt taking home the prize for the most original category. Laxey School won the best year 5/6 category with Auldyn School winning the best under year 5 category.

Mary Doyle commented ‘We were overwhelmed with the response - the judges had a tough job to review over 350 paintings and were astounded with children’s creativity. We tried to keep the brief as open as possible with our Water in Mann theme and we received a huge variety of pieces. All the artwork is now on display on the acoustic barrier as your enter the new Douglas Water Treatment Works site and we feel it really brightens up the construction site entrance. We would like to thank all the schools for taking part and our judges, who were very impressed with the standard of work submitted.”

The judges were Gen Hicks of Isle of Man Newspapers, Helen Summerscales of Isle of Man Advertising, Steve Babb and Mary Doyle. The artwork will remain on display until the acoustic barrier is taken down and the Works are close to completion. For further information on any aspect of the Crystal Project Mary can be contacted on 695949. The artwork is now on display within the new works.

SAFETY SAM COMES TO CRONK-Y-BERRY

Pupils at Cronk-y-Berry School were given a safety presentation recently by the team behind the Water Authority’s Crystal Project. Nicola Ward of Charles Brand (IOM) Limited along with Mary Doyle, Customer Liaison Co-ordinator for the Crystal Project and representatives of the main contractors EarthTech Engineering explained the safety aspects of the construction phase of the £25 million contract for the new Douglas Water Treatment Works and other schemes within the Crystal Project – the raw water main from Baldwin reservoir to the new treatment works and the treated water mains which will run through the Cronk-y-Berry estate onwards to the Cronk ny Mona Service Reservoir.

Mary Doyle, Crystal Project Customer Liaison Co-ordinator, commented, “Safety issues are paramount to ourselves and all the contractors and the Safety Sam initiative gets the message across in an easy-to-understand format which relates well to the children. We are keeping all residents fully informed of developments on the schemes of the Crystal Project but can be contacted on 682450 should any queries arise.”

The Crystal Project is the team name for the major capital improvements planned for Douglas.

The three schemes included in The Crystal Project are the construction of the new water treatment works at Homefield Road, the raw water main from Baldwin reservoir to the new treatment works and the mains required to connect the treatment works to the distribution system. This team name recognises the common purpose of all those working on the Douglas schemes and the importance of teamwork to ensure that the schemes are delivered on time and budget.
