New raw water pipeline

The construction of the new works in Douglas, means a new raw water main is required to supply water directly from the West Baldwin Reservoir.

This reservoir, opened over 100 years ago, is the main supply of water for the Douglas area, and forms a key point in the Authority’s Island wide strategy.

The new main is vital in ensuring sufficient supply quantities can be produced and is a critical element in determining the completion date for the new works.

The contract for laying this main was awarded to Island Drainage and Groundwork in October 2005 and work started in January 2006. Work on the main is now completed with the final connection to the new Douglas Water Treatment Works carried out a couple of months ago.

As with the other elements of the Crystal Project, the Authority and its partners were very sensitive to the nature and location of the work, leading to detailed plans for minimising any possible disruption and ensuring the highest standard possible is met in re-instating the land.
